El ser humano no está preparado para vivir meses con un único pensamiento en la mente. Y es que, vivir en un estado constante de alarma hace que el peligro del covid-19 acabe quedando en un sonido de fondo que acompaña a esta nueva rutina. Por eso, no se puede culpar a nadie de distraerse. Al fin y al cabo, durante los últimos meses todos han vivido únicamente para leer las noticias de la pandemia y preocuparse de cómo afecta ésta a sus vidas.

El único problema es cuando cedemos a bajar las barreras de protección con tal de amenizar el paso del covid-19.

Puede que aquellas personas que estén familiarizadas con el mundo de la moda y la estética ya supieran que la moda de las mascarillas se acercaba de manera profética. En abril de 2019 el cantante Justin Bieber y la modelo Kendall Jenner optaron por presentarse con mascarillas en Coachella. La prensa advirtió que el hecho de que alguien tan famoso llevara mascarilla en un evento tan importante podía hacer surgir una nueva estética.

Sin embargo, ellos no fueron los primeros en adoptar la mascarilla como propuesta estética. Lo cierto es que la moda alternativa y la música urbana lleva años detrás de este artículo. El trapero, Bad Bunny la había convertido en una especie de sello personal años antes al estallido del covid-19. Pero no es el único. Otras caras del trap como Jhay Cortez, Luna Ki o Kaydy Cain se habían dejado ver con mascarilla.

Pero incluso en sus orígenes como artículo de moda, las mascarillas estaban ligadas con un problema de salud real. La mascarilla es la encarnación en la moda de la distopía ecológica a la que el planeta se acerca. De hecho, en Asia ya estaba normalizado llevar mascarilla en los exteriores para protegerse del smog de las ciudades industriales. El problema era (y sigue siendo) tan evidente que en 2014 parece que las mascarillas eran el artículo que tenía mayor presencia en las pasarelas chinas en la semana de la moda.

La prensa hablaba de esta tendencia como “Pollution Chic”. Una moda que tenía en cuenta el peligro de la contaminación para construir sobre él la fantasía.

El reciente ‘boom’ de las mascarillas

Como anunciaba el portal de moda Lyst, las búsquedas de mascarillas han subido cerca de un 500% desde el principio de la Pandemia.

Y es que cuando el covid-19 empezó a extenderse la demanda de mascarillas no podía cubrirse con la oferta existente. Por eso comenzaron a proliferar en internet tutoriales bien intencionados sobre cómo fabricar mascarillas caseras. Muchas grandes marcas y pequeños comercios también trataron de aportar mascarillas, pero muy pocas de estas primeras mascarillas estaban realmente testadas como barrera contra el contagio del covid-19.

De la moda al ridículo

Ahora que la mascarilla es obligatoria y llevamos meses conviviendo con ella, parece que ya no es tan importante que realmente sirva de barrera contra el covid-19. El precio o la estética parecen ser los criterios más comunes por los cuales escogemos nuestra mascarilla. El hecho de no tener en cuenta en cuenta la protección real parece absurdo. Al fin y al cabo, la mascarilla es un artículo médico y ¿Qué médico operaría con un bisturí de juguete?. Sin embargo y lamentablemente, el uso de mascarillas inútiles es muy común: Tejidos 100% algodón que no protegen, neoprenos solo acumulan bacterias,.. Incluso mascarillas con cortes y costuras centrales por donde penetran todo tipo de patógenos. Todas estas mascarillas pueden verse en las calles.

El nivel de mascarilla simbólica parece tocar techo con ejemplares que están diseñados en principio sólo como ornamento. Las mascarillas de diseño construidas en crochet o aquellas que son una simple tira de brillantes  pueden ser ejemplos de éstas. Suponemos que la lógica es llevarlas encima de las mascarillas estándar, pero sabemos que no siempre es así.

A principios de este mes, la cantante estadounidense Lana del Rey llevó una mascarilla compuesta únicamente por una red brillante a la firma de su libro de poesía. Esto desató muchas críticas en internet por primar su estética a la seguridad de sus fans.

Las mascarillas nanotecnológicas son las más seguras del mercado gracias a que su nanored filtra hasta los patógenos más pequeños. Además cuentan también por partículas de plata que neutralizan las bacterias y los virus. Esa autolimpieza las hace muy fáciles de reutilizar y muy respetuosas con la piel, puesto que no generan acné.
